Abstract

This article summarizes and analyzes the results of a research whose purpose was to carry out a physical-territorial characterization of the built city, especially considering the modalities and magnitude of the territorial expansion of Santiago in the last decade. In this sense, it sought to provide empirical arguments for the discussion on the economic, social and environmental impacts of metropolitan expansion. With this objective, the growth process of Santiago in the last ten years was measured and characterized, quantifying the perimeter growth of the urban area between 1991 and 2000. At the same time, the main urbanization patterns that characterize it were analyzed, considering especially the different housing typologies built and the main industrial facilities implemented.
