Abstract

The literature on innovation systems and regional development points at the existence of positive impacts of geographical proximity of scientific and technological structures over economic activities. Based on this observation this paper aims to evaluate the effects of the localization of Brazilian innovation system actors over local economic activities. The econometric results show that the industry sector is positively affected by the presence of those actors in the same region. These results suggest that the late expansion in Brazilian innovation system may have important effects over regional productive structures, mainly over industry. For the tertiary sector statistically significant impacts were not found. Nevertheless, the data suggest that the regional presence of the innovation system actors favors the sector.
