Abstract

This paper discusses the evolution of city planning in Portugal with a special emphasis on revitalization of city centre. Five periods are identified as: the birth of city planning (before 1820), the constitutional monarchy (1820-1910), the dictatorship regime (1926-1974), the "third wave" (1974-1985), and the European Union phase (1985-2003). I argue that even although there may not be direct temporal correspondence between historic developments, the four major international movements of the city beautiful, urban renewal, urban enterprise, and the sustainable and creative city all made their debut in Portugal.
