Abstract

The insertion of the Mexican southeast region into the globalization process has been a difficult task. The loss of economic activity, exclusion, and migration have been signs of the region's deterioration in the last decade. Nonetheless, this region contains several local"nodes" or spheres whose products and activities have the potential to participate in global production-distribution networks. This paper analyzes the export chain development of a tropical fruit (pineapple) under the hypothesis that innovation support and strengthening of local production networks in southeast Mexico are closely linked to the formation of logistic supply chains and technical and operative control undertaken by local actors. The theoretical basis avoids any sharp conceptual categorization that distinguishes between production, distribution, and consumption, placing emphasis on the integration of flows to develop, integrate, and make viable local areas in a context of global relations.
