Abstract

The article explores the spatial association between the Human Development Index, the Gini coefficient and the level of urbanization in Mexico. We determine the association between the three indexes with a non-parametric measure (λ) as well as with a geographically weighted regression model. We find a negative association between urbanization and inequality, but mostly, our analysis suggests a strong importance of space (the regional distribution of the urban condition) in the local measures of inequality.
